Overview
To protect you and the rest of the CBU community, several steps have been done to ensure that your data is well protected. However, cybersecurity is a group effort, and there are several steps you can take to protect yourself and the rest of CBU.
How to Stay Safe Online
- Change your password to something unique, do not share these passwords with anybody. The Government of Canada recommends using short phrases rather than words or number strings and not using the same password for multiple accounts.
- Do not click links or files from unknown sources. Do not engage with emails from unknown sources.
- Use Multifactor Authentication (MFA) whenever possible. MFA protects your accounts even if your password is compromised, or forgotten.
- Do not perform transactions or engage in confidential material (e.g. filling your taxes) over public WIFI (such as EDURoam).
- Keep your internet browser, devices, and other software, up-to-date.
Why you need to stay safe
There are three primary ways cyber criminals can compromise your online security: brute force, malware, and phishing. Staying safe can prevent criminals from accessing important information such as your debit card, social security, identity, etc.
Brute force can be stopped by making complex passwords that are nearly impossible to guess.
Malware can be used to compromise your security, give criminals your password and more, they can be avoided by not clicking on suspicious links or files.
Phishing is when emails sent to you are attempting to steal your information, do not give your password, social insurance, baking information, etc., to any unknown source.
Often attempts at phishing pretend to be a legitimate source (such as a friend, classmate, or organization). CBU will never send you an email asking you for your password information. If you are unsure if a source is legit, seek confirmation from IT Services.
