Updating Your Devices

Overview 

Keeping your devices updated ensures they are protected against the latest cybersecurity threats, compatible with other services, and more efficient to use. It is important that you keep your operating system, browser, and other applications up to date. 

This article will show you how to keep your operating system, and browsers, up to date. 

Updating your Computer/Laptop:

The two main operating systems are Windows (e.g. Windows 10, Windows 11), and macOS (e.g. macOS Sequoia). Most devices will automatically update, but if you are experiencing issues, it can be beneficial to manually check if your device has pending updates.

Updating Windows 11

  1. Go to the Start button (🪟) at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Type Setting into the search bar. 
  3. Navigate to "Windows Update" at the bottom of the menu and select it.
  4. The new page will tell you whether you are up to date, and what actions to take. 

Updating macOS Sequoia

  1. Go to the Apple Menu in the upper-left corner o the screen. 
  2. Select System Settings. 
  3. On the new page, select "General" in the right-hand menu.
  4. Select "Software Update"
  5. The new page will tell you whether you are up to date, and what actions to take. 

 

Updating your Browser

The most common browsers are Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, and Microsoft Edge. Most browsers will automatically update, but if you are encountering issues, it may be worthwhile to manually check. 

Please note that updating your browser may close your tabs, please save anything important before you update. 

Chrome

  1. Open Chrome as normal. 
  2. In the top right corner, select "More  More", then "Help," and then "About Google Chrome." 
  3. On the new page, select "Re-launch."   

Firefox

  1. Open Firefox as normal. 
  2. In the top right corner, select the menu button " Fx89menuButton", scroll to "Help," and then select "About Firefox."
  3. The new page will tell you whether Firefox is up to date. 

Edge 

  1. Open Edge as normal.
  2. In the top right corner, select the menu button " " , scroll to "Help and Feedback" and then select "About Microsoft Edge. 
  3. The new page will tell you whether Firefox is up to date. 

Safari 

  1. Unlike Chrome, Firefox, and Edge, Safari updates whenever you update your device. Find out more here
