Password-less Sign In Error

Overview 

  • "Authentication method 'X509, MultiFactor, PasswordlessPhoneSignIn' by which the user authenticated with the service doesn't match requested authentication method"

Microsoft Authenticator App Instructions

  1. Navigate to the Microsoft Authenticator Application on your mobile device.
     
  2. Choose your Cape Breton University account
     
  3. Click the Cog/Gear Wheel in the upper right hand corner.

  4. You should see the option Disable passwordless sign-in. Click on this.
     
  5. Click Disable on the next prompt
     
  6. It should prompt you to authenticate and once that is done then you will return back to a normal password required sign in which will not give you this error message. 

Web Based via My Microsoft Account

  1. Navigate to https://myaccount.microsoft.com/
     
  2. Login with your CBU Credentials
     
  3. Click Update Info under Secuirty InfoUploaded Image (Thumbnail)
     
  4. You should now see your sign in methods listed. Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)
     
  5. Click Delete by the passwordless signin method.

  6. When you go to log in next time it should prompt you to log in with your user name and password, then authenticate. 
     
  7. If it does not send you a code or you are unable to authenticate then you must request an MFA reset to the IT Service Desk (contact details below).
